Compete in Little Lyras Australia!

Little Lyras is a nation wide dedicated aerial hoop competition open to all genders and levels between the ages of 8 and 15 competing as Soloists, Doubles or in Groups of 3 to 5. Competitors will be divided into two age groups: JUNIORS (8 to 11 years) and INTERMEDIATE (12 to 15 years). + Audition videos must be no more than 2.5mins for Juniors & 3mins for Intermediates.
+ Audition routine does not have to be the same as your competing routine.
+ Audition video must be one continuous take (no editing).
+ Video submissions will only be accepted via link to YouTube or Vimeo.
+ Due to Covid restrictions, in 2022, applicants must be a resident of the state in which they are auditioning for.
+ Please only audition for Little Lyras Australia if both the participant and representative are financially able, available and willing to attend the National Finals Event on the date listed above. Please note any successful applicants withdrawing from a State Heat or National Final with less than 4 weeks notice will be restricted from entering the following year (exceptions will be made for injury or illness accompanied by a doctors certificate).
*Please note: If Covid restrictions prevent us from being able to hold a live state heat or National Final, we will automatically switch to an online virtual event using pre-recorded videos. Please only audition if you are willing to perform both live and online.

Are there any categories (eg; beginners, advanced etc), or criteria?
At this stage, Little Lyras is open level which means there are no categories (only age groups), criteria or prohibited tricks.

If my child is 7 years of age, but will be 8 by their state heat date, can they audition?
As long as the competitor is between the ages of 8 and 15 on the date of their state heat, they may audition. If they will be 16 on the date of their state heat, they must audition for Miss Lyra.

Does Little Lyras cover travel expenses for successful interstate competitors?
It is the representative's (a parent or guardian over the age of 18) responsibility to organise and cover all funding for travel to and from Little Lyras state heats and National Finals.

All finalists will be graded as follows:

Technique (out of 10)
Performance (out of 10)
Overall presentation
Costume, hair etc (out of 10)

Rigging & Safety

Rigging for all Miss Lyra Australia events is done by our tried, tested and trusted qualified professionals. You will be provided with a pulley system (including rope, carabiner and swivel/spinner). The pulley system allows competitors to provide their own single point lyra and nominate their preferred floor to bottom of the hoop height. Please note you have roughly 4m-5m overall height (from the stage floor to the rigging point) to work with (this may vary slightly between state heats and will be confirmed once auditions have closed). Whilst we are more than happy for you to provide your own strap/rope, in the past we have run into issues with achieving your preferred hoop height using straps/ropes 1m or more in length. Please factor the length of your strap/rope into your overall height clearance. If you are unable to provide your own lyra, we may be able to organise hiring one for you.

PLEASE NOTE: Pulley systems do have bounce and tend to swing. Please factor this into your training and performance.

For your safety, ALL LIVE MISS LYRA & LITTLE LYRAS SHOWS REQUIRE THE USE OF CRASH MATS. The mat will be provided for you and details of its size etc will be sent out with successful competitors information packs.

Props & Music

Props are permitted and encouraged but to be kept to a minimum and must be able to be set up and removed by our stage hands within 1min. No two competitors will be allowed use of the same musical track and approval will be given on a first in best dressed basis. Routines are to be no more than 2.5mins in length for Juniors and 3 minutes in length for Intermediates.

Tech Run

We will be holding a tech run on the day at the venue in the same order as the show itself. Once we have received all accepted competitors performance information we will be able to confirm all categories tech run times. Each competitor will get one full run through with their music and props. This will be your opportunity to discuss anything you need to with the sound, riggers and production teams. Please ensure your props are 100% completed prior to your tech run. It will be your responsibility to ensure you are organised, on time and do not miss your tech run.

Covid Back Up Plan

If Covid restrictions prevent us from holding a live, in venue state heat (for QLD, NSW, VIC & SA only in 2022), we will automatically switch over to an online, virtual event using pre-recorded videos. Dependent on the Covid restrictions at the time and how much notice we get for the change over, the virtual event will either be held on the original state heat date, or at a later scheduled date (you will be given ample time to record your video). New competitor information packs will be sent out with details of the online format should we have to switch over. We will endeavour to give as much notice of any changes as possible, when possible.
We appreciate these are difficult times that we live in. Whilst our first preference will always be a live show, we are prepared to do what we can to continue to keep Little Lyras alive throughout the obstacles of this pandemic. Please consider this Covid Back Up Plan before auditioning for Little Lyras in 2022. We ask that participants only apply if they are willing to perform both live and online.
